Why do I need an EIN?

Just as individuals have a Social Security Number to uniquely identify themselves, your business needs an Employer Identification Number (EIN) as a form of unique identification. It is, in a sense, an SSN for your business.

You will need an EIN in order to do business under your business name. Most banks will require an EIN to open a checking account in the business name. The same is true when applying for a credit card in the business name. Many businesses from whom you may purchase inventory or supplies will also require that you have an EIN. If you sell products or services to other business customers, they will require that you have an EIN to support their IRS reporting requirements.

An EIN is mandatory for corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, and multi-member limited liability companies (LLCs), as it is used when filing the business tax return.

Faxed Application Status

If you ask us to deliver your EIN application to IRS by fax, you can expect to receive your new EIN within 4 business days (provided you entered a fax-back number on your application).

If you did not provide a fax-back number on your application, allow extra time for IRS to deliver your EIN by US Mail.

If you have waited the specified time and you still have not received your EIN, you may contact IRS at 1-800-829-4933 to check on your application's status. If you call the IRS before they have completed processing your application, the IRS telephone agents will not have access to the application, and you will be told that they have no record on file.

Online Application Status

If you choose to receive your EIN instantly online, your EIN will be presented to you in your browser and you may immediately print your completed application (Form SS-4) with the EIN on the form.

However, your application will still be individually reviewed by IRS personnel. They are checking for such things as invalid SSN, improper business name, inappropriate business classification, etc. This hand review takes about 7 to 10 business days. During this review period, your EIN is classed as 'temporary'. If you call the IRS before they have completed the review of your application, the IRS telephone agents will not have access to the application, and you will be told that they find no record. Upon successful completion of this review process, your EIN will be classed as 'approved'. If the review finds any issues, the IRS will send a letter (or fax) to you requesting additional information.

Changes to an Existing EIN

If you have already applied for and received your EIN and you need to make changes to your application (such as to change the business name), you must call IRS at 1-800-829-4933.

Completing an Unfinished Application

You can complete a previously started but unfinished application by going

Multiple requests

I need to apply for multiple businesses using the same e-mail address. If you need to submit multiple EIN applications for different businesses under the same e-mail address, suffix a : and a number to your e-mail address, i.e. harrymiller@aol.com:2 when creating your account. This will establish a record for each new application but will allow us to communicate with you using the non-suffixed version of your e-mail address (i.e. harrymiller@aol.com).

Forgot Password

If you have lost or forgotten your password, you can
